The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will host New Hampshire on Wednesday night at Detrick Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the CCSU campus. Fans can also watch live on NECFrontRow.com.
Here are some notes on the Blue Devils heading into tonight's game:
Tonight • The Blue Devils (1-2) are looking for their second win of the season against the Wildcats (2-1) of New Hampshire. Last Wednesday, CCSU won its home opener against Rhode Island by a score of 65-58. UNH has a pair of victories this season, but lost its last game to Northeastern on Saturday. Following today's game, CCSU will travel to Hartford on Tuesday (11/26) and La Salle on Saturday (11/30).
Series History • The Blue Devils hold an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series between these squads. CCSU won last year's meeting, 43-32, on the road in Durham, NH. The Blue Devils have won four straight in the series. The last meeting in New Britain was an 83-44 victory of the Blue Devils on Nov. 27, 2011. That meeting was the CCSU's last game with a 30+ point margin of victory.
Last Game • The Blue Devils won their first game of the season against Rhode Island on Wednesday (11/13). CCSU was led by four scorers in double-digits with senior Jessica Babe's 17 points leading the way. Freshman Lauren Wolosik (15), senior Lauren Arbogast (14) and junior Kaley Watras (10) also posted double figure scoring numbers. Rhode Island tied the contest on a layup by Tayra Melendez with 2:55 remaining in regulation, but the Blue Devils answered with back-to-back three-point baskets by Wolosik and Babe to take a six point lead. Sophomore Amanda Harrington grabbed seven rebounds to lead CCSU.
Harrington on the Boards • Head coach Beryl Piper said prior to the season that sophomore Amanda Harrington needed to rebound when she was on the floor. Harrington is following through by pulling down 22 boards over the first three games of the season. She is averaging 5.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 25.7 minutes per game over the first three contests.
Scoring From Jess Babe • Jessica Babe matched her career-high with 21 points against the Knights in the season opener. She had a down game against South Florida, but bounced back with 17 points against Rhode Island on Wednesday. She currently leads the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game.
Wolosik Earns Rookie Honor • Freshman Lauren Wolosik connected for 15 points in Wednesday's win over Rhode Island, a new career-high. On Monday, she was named Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week in the conference's weekly women's basketball release. Against the Rams, Wolosik hit four-of-four from the field and six-of-eight from the free throw line. Her only three-pointer of the game broke a 53-53 tie with just over two minutes left in regulation.
Great at Home • CCSU starts the 2013-14 home campaign at 1-0, a familiar spot for the Blue Devils who were 11-3 at home last season, including 8-1 in NEC home games. This is nothing new for CCSU who is 30-11 at home over the last three plus seasons. Under head coach Beryl Piper the Blue Devils are 5-2 in home openers, with four straight home opener victories.
High Percentage Shots • After shooting below 30% in the first two games of the season CCSU connected on 50% (22-of-44) from the field in Wednesday's win over Rhode Island. CCSU was also far more successful on three-point attempts - shooting 55.6% (5-of-9) from behind the arc - but the Blue Devils also attempted fewer threes than their first two games.
