Women's Basketball Edges New Hampshire
Senior Lauren Arbogast hit a freew throw with one second left in regulation to give CCSU the victory.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team earned a 53-52 victory over New Hampshire on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils (2-2) edged the Wildcats (2-2) on a free throw by senior Lauren Arbogast with one second remaining on the clock.
The Wildcats inbounded the ball with 3.6 seconds remaining and the game tied 52-52. The inbound pass went into the post and Arbogast was fouled as she tried to secure the rebound of Corinne Coia's missed layup with one second left on the clock. Arbogast missed her first free throw, but connected on the second to give CCSU a one point edge.
New Hampshire inbounded the ball following the layup, but the Wildcats were unable to get across midcourt before time expired.
The first half of the game featured eight lead changes and three tie scores. The final tie of the half came with 24 seconds left as sophomore TeJahne Malone stole the ball and scored on a layup to knot the contest at 25-25.
CCSU built a 13 point lead over the Wildcats with a 24-11 run to start the second half.
The Blue Devils held their double-digit lead until the 6:53 mark in the period. From there UNH closed the gap to a single point with a 12-0 run. The run eventually grew to 16-3 as the Wildcats tied the contest at 52-52 with 38 seconds remaining.
Senior Jessica Babe led CCSU with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and a steal. Babe committed just one turnover in over 36 minutes of action. Her double-double is the first of the year for the Blue Devils.
Malone came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points. She also posted five rebounds, a steal, a block and an assist in 24 minutes on the floor.
In addition to hitting the go ahead free throw, Arbogast grabbed 11 rebounds to match Babe for the game high. She finished with six points.
Senior Brooke Bailey also had a strong game with nine points and nine rebounds. Bailey added two steals and a block in 22 minutes on the court.
As a team, the Blue Devils shot 32.3% (21-65) from the floor and 29.4% (5-of-17) from behind the arc. CCSU was also six-of-10 from the free throw line. The Wildcats went to the line 23 times, but converted just 10 free throws.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Hartford and then will travel to La Salle on Saturday, Nov. 30.
