Women's Hoop Falls at Sacred Heart

Sophomore TeJahne Malone scored a career-high 15 points in her first collegiate start, but the Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart by a score of 77-59 on Monday night at the William H. Pitt Center in Fairfield, CT. The Blue Devils fall to 8-8 and 2-4 in the Northeast Conference with the loss, Sacred heart improves to 7-10 and 4-2 with the win.
Malone scored a team-high 15 points on five-of-six shooting from the floor. She also connected on five-of-eight free throw attempts. Malone added eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal.
The Blue Devils shot just 28.1% (9-32) in the first half and trailed 32-25 at the break. Sacred Heart hit 13-of-32 in the period, including four three-pointers.
The Pioneers started the second half on a 15-2 run that gave Sacred Heart a 47-27 lead with 14:37 left to play. The Blue Devils were able to cut the deficit to 12 points twice during the second half, but the Pioneers answered with nine straight points to take a 60-39 advantage.
Junior Kaley Watras (9), senior Jessica Babe (7) and sophomore Kayla Miller (6) were the leading scorers in the second half for CCSU.
Babe finished with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. She had three assists in the game, which moves her ahead of Paige Martin and into fifth place on CCSU's career list with 338.
Watras finished with 12 points, two assists and two steals.
Sacred Heart's Hannah Kimmel lead all scorers with 20 points.
CCSU shot 34.5% (20-58) for the game and 25% (3-12) from behind the arc. The Blue Devils hit just 16-of-25 (64%) from the free throw line. Sacred Heart connected for 47.5% (28-59) from the floor, 8-19 (42.1%) from three and 81.3% (13-16) from the foul line.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Detrick Gymnasium against St. Francis Brooklyn. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
