Curtin's Complete-Game, Dewaine's 4 RBIs Lead Baseball by Wagner, 5-0
The Blue Devils will play top-seeded Bryant on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Central Connecticut defeated Wagner, 5-0, on the opening day of the Northeast Conference baseball championship at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Senior Tom Curtin threw a complete-game and junior Buddy Dewaine drove in four runs to lead the Blue Devils. Central improved to 27-20 overall on the season with the win.
CCSU will play top-seeded Bryant in a winner's bracket game on Friday, May 24, at 4:00 p.m. Wagner will face Sacred Heart in an elimination game at Noon.
The Blue Devils sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning and took an early lead. Junior Chandler Debrosse drew a lead-off walk and sophomore Sam Loda singled down the right field line. After the Seahawks got two outs, junior Buddy Dewaine hit a two-run double down the right field line and sophomore Jake Siracusa followed with a double to right center to drive in Dewaine and make it 3-0.
Senior Tom Curtin was efficient and in control on the mound. He faced the minimum through four innings and only surrendered a pair of base hits in the first six innings. The Seahawks managed to put something together to begin the seventh and threaten the Blue Devils' lead. Will Johnson and Freddy Sabido led off the inning with consecutive singles and a misplay allowed them to move to second and third with no outs. After a conference at the mound, Curtin came back to retire the next three batters.
Central would respond in the bottom of the inning by giving Curtin two more runs to work with. After a walk to Loda, sophomore TT Bowens singled through the left side. With two outs, Dewaine laced a double to left that drove in Loda and, after a review of the play at the plate, Bowens to push the CCSU lead to 5-0.
Curtin, who was the winning pitcher in CCSU's 2017 NEC championsihip after throwing 3.2 shutout innings, tossed a complete game shutout needing just 97 pitches. He allowed just six hits and recorded five strikeouts to run his shutout streak at Dodd Stadium to 12.2 innings.
Dewaine finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Loda scored a pair of runs, hwile Debrosse and Bowens each added a hit and a run.
