Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Saturday Against Saint Peter's
The Blue Devils and Peacocks will play again Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team swept Saint Peter's in a doubleheader Saturday at CCSU Baseball Field in New Britain, CT. The Blue Devils jumped out to a four-run lead and got a strong start from senior Tom Curtin in the first game, winning 5-3. In the second game, Central scored nine runs in its final two at bats to rally for a 9-6 win. CCSU improves to 5-5 on the season.
The Blue Devils and Peacocks will play again Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
GAME 1: CCSU 5, Saint Peter's 3
The Blue Devils scored three runs in the first inning. Junior Dave Matthews doubled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jake Siracusa scored on the second wild pitch of the inning to make it 3-0.
Central tacked on a run in the fourth when sophomore Sam Loda knocked in Siracusa to make it 4-0.
Saint Peter's got within a run with a three-run seventh. Andrew Connor and Trent Koerner each drove in a run to make it 4-2. Koerner would score on a passed ball to make it 4-3.
Central got a run back in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases. Siracusa drew a walk to bring home a run and make it 5-3.
Senior Mike Appel would record the final six outs for his first save of the year. Curtin tossed 7.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Matthews, Siracusa and Loda each had an hit and RBI for CCSU. Siracusa scored a pair of runs.
GAME 2: CCSU 9, Saint Peter's 6
The Blue Devils rallied from a four-run deficit and scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to sweep the doubleheader.
Peter Ferony drove in a run to give the Peacocks a 1-0 run in the first inning.
SPU pushed the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fifth. Koerner led off with a homerun and a triple by Hunter Mason scored a run to make it 3-0. Nick Sciubba's sac fly made it 4-0.
The Blue Devils responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. CCSU loaded the bases with two outs before freshman Dylan Sanchez tripled to right-center to clear the bases. An error would extend the inning and allow Sanchez to score and tie the game.
Saint Peter's came back with two runs in the sixth. Koerner singled in a run and an error on the play allowed a second run to score and make it 6-4.
Central came back in the bottom of the inning with five runs all coming with two outs. CCSU loaded the bases and a wild pitch brough in the first run before junior Chandler Debrosse doubled in two runs to give Central a 7-6 lead. Matthews and junior Buddy Dewaine would each follow with RBI hits to give CCSU a 9-6 lead.
Senior Jared Gallagher pitched the seventh and picked up the save for Central. He allowed a lead off single before getting a groundout and double-play to end the game.
Sanchez had two hits and three RBIs for CCSU, while Dewaine added two hits and an RBI. Loda and freshman Dan Covino each scored two runs.
Junior Brandon Fox started for CCSU and went 6.0 innings to get the win.
