Baseball Pulls Away From Wagner, 10-3, Sunday
Central will host Quinnipiac at home on Tuesday
The Central Connecticut baseball team pounded out a 10-3 win over Wagner on Sunday in Northeast Conference action. Juniors Chandler Debrosse and Dave Matthews each hit a homerun and drove in three runs in the victory. With the win, CCSU improves to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league play, while Wagner slides to 7-16 overall and 3-3 in the NEC.
Central will host Quinnipiac at home on Tuesday, April 2, at 3:00 p.m.
CCSU opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Junior Buddy Dewaine hit a ground-rule double to lead off and scored on a one-out double by sophomore Jake Siracusa. With two outs, sophomore Jay Devito roped a single to right field to score Siracusa and make it 2-0.
The Seahawks got a run back in the fourth when Tyler Sanfillippo tripled home Griffin Schneider to make it 2-1.
The Blue Devils would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning. CCSU loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Matt Bertochi hit a sacrifice fly to score classmate Sam Loda and make it 3-1. Debrosse followed with a single to plate freshman Jack Nolan and push the lead to 4-1.
The teams would trade runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with Siracusa hitting a sac fly in the fifth and Debrosse hitting a solo homerun in the sixth to account for the Central runs and make it 6-3.
The Blue Devils put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth inning. Nolan walked to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice. A Bertochi single put runners on the corners for Debrosse who singled down the third base line to bring home a run and make it 7-3. With two outs, Matthews hit his second homer of the weekend with a shot to centerfield to make it 10-3.
Debrosse finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and his first career homerun. Loda and Devito each collected two hits for Central, which had 11 hits as a team and had hits from seven different batters.
Senior Patrick Mitchell started for CCSU and went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, while scattering eight hits. Senior Mike Appel got the win throwing 1.1 innings of relief. Blue Devils relievers did not allow a hit over the final 2.2 innings of the contest.
Wagner had 11 hits as a team with its middle of the order hitters combining for six hits. Joe Silvestrone was 1-for-4 with a solo homerun. McCae Allen started on the mound and took the loss after allowing four runs in 3.2 innings. He allowed five hits and walked four.
