Baseball Falls to Navy, 5-2, on Sunday
Central is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday at home against Hartford.
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision at Navy on Sunday morning at Max Bishop Stadium. Juniors Chandler Debrosse and Dave Matthews each had two hits for the Blue Devils.
CCSU slips to 0-3 on the season and is scheduled to host Hartford at CCSU Baseball Field on Wednesday.
The Midshipmen opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacob Williamson led off with a single and moved to second on an error before advancing to third on a single by Christian Hodge. Williamson came home on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Liam Lowery hit a one-out single that allowed Hodge to come around to score following an error to make it 2-0.
The Blue Devils got a run back in the fifth after a two-out rally. Freshman Jack Nolan walked and junior Chris Kanios reached on an error on the next at bat. Sophomore Jeremy Sagun walked to load the bases with two outs and a wild pitch allowed Nolan to come home to make it 2-1.
Central tied the game in the top of the sixth with a run. Debrosse led off with a single and moved to third on a wild pitch and a fly out. Matthews followed with a one-out double to right field that scored Debrosse to make it 2-2. The Blue Devils would load the bases with two outs, but Navy was able to get out of the jam with a groundout.
Navy responded with three runs in the home half of the sixth inning. A throwing error allowed Williamson to reach base to lead off and Hodge followed with a double to drive in the go-ahead run. After a single and passed ball put runners on second and third, Zach Stevens singled to bring in two runs and make it 5-2.
Trey Braithwaite would only allow one hit by CCSU over the final three innings to earn the win for Navy.
Junior Brandon Fox started for Central and went 5.0 innings. He struck out two and allowed two earned runs, taking the loss. Senior Mike Appel tossed 2.0 innings and recorded three strikeouts.
Sophomores Jake Siracusa and Christian Layne each had a hit, while Nolan had a hit and run scored.
Stevens with 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Navy. Jared Leins started for Navy and allowed one earned run in 5.1 innings, while striking out five.
