Baseball Wins in 12 innings, 4-3, Against St. Bonaventure
The Blue Devils play the Bonnies on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team won, 4-3, in 12 innings on Saturday against St. Bonaventure at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, FL. Sophomore Jake Siracusa drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th to give the Blue Devils their second win in as many days. Central plays the Bonnies on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
Junior Brandon Fox started for CCSU went 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits and striking out nine and allowing one walk. Fox gave up three unearned runs, all coming in the fourth inning.
The Bonnies opened the scoring in the fourth when Matthew Williams and Kevin Higgins led off with back-to-back singles. An error allowed Ryan O'Connor to reach base and load the bases with no outs. Fox nearly worked out of the jam with consecutive strikeouts, but Sam Fuller hit a bases-clearing double to make it 3-0.
The Blue Devils got a run in the bottom of the inning. Junior Dave Matthews singled and moved to second on a single by junior Buddy Dewaine. Another groud ball moved Matthews to third before freshman Jack Nolan hit into a fielder's choice that drove in CCSU's first run of the day to make it 3-1.
Central cut the deficit to 3-2 with a run in the sixth inning. Dewaine drew a two-out walk and sophomore Jake Siracusa followed with a single. Nolan drove in Dewaine for his second RBI of the day with a single.
The Blue Devils tied the game in the seventh. Freshman Dan Covino walked to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice. Following a pitching change, junior Chandler Debrosse doubled home Covino to make it 3-3.
The Blue Devils would win the game in the 12th. With one out, Matthews doubled and moved to third on a single by Dewaine. Siracusa followed with a hit to bring in the game-winning run.
Senior Mike Appel earned the win, tossing 6.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and just two hits and one walk.
Dewaine finished the day 3-for-5, while Siracusa and Nolan each added two hits. Matthews had a hit and two runs scored.
Fuller had three hits and three RBIs for SBU. Murphy O'Brien took the loss for the Bonnies and was charged with one run in 5.0 innings of work.
