Siracusa Hits for the Cycle; Baseball Rallies Past Quinnipiac, 10-9
Central travels to Binghamton on Friday.
Central Connecticut rallied for a 10-9 win over Quinnipiac in baseball action on Wednesday at CCSU Baseball Field. The Blue Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win for the third time in four games. Sophomore Jake Siracusa hit for the cycle and scored four runs to lead the CCSU offense.
Siracusa's cycle was the first by a Blue Devil since May 4, 2010, when Richie Tri went 4-for-5 with six RBIs in a 19-6 CCSU win at Hartford.
The win improves Central to 11-9 overall on the season.
CCSU will travel to Binghamton to play Niagara for a non-conference contest on Saturday, April 6.
The Blue Devils raced out to a five-run lead in the opening three innings. Junior Chandler Debrosse scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to open the scoring. A ground out by junior Buddy Dewaine scored freshman Dan Covino and an error allowed Dewaine to move to second on the play. Dewaine would score on the second Quinnipiac error of the inning to make it 3-0.
In the third inning, sophomore Sam Loda drove in Dewaine on an RBI-groundout to make it 4-0. Sophomore Peyton Stephens would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Siracusa to make it 5-0.
The Bobcats would rally with six straight runs to take a one-run lead. In the fourth inning, QU plated four runs. Kevin Huscher led off with a homerun to make it 4-1. An error with one out led to a pair of unearned runs. Another error would extend the inning and a single by Gianni Arici plated another run to make it 5-4.
Quinnipiac scored two runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead. Doubles by Colton Bender and Anthony Cruz each drove in a run to make it 6-5.
CCSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Siracusa hit a homerun to right field to lead off to tie the game. Loda would score on a wild pitch to make it 7-6.
The Blue Devils added to the lead with an unearned run in the sixth before QU scored three runs in the seventh to make it 9-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, Siracusa started the rally with a two-out triple. Loda and Stephens followed with back-to-back doubles, each plating a run to give CCSU a 10-9 lead.
Senior Jared Gallagher worked around a double in the ninth to nail down his third save of the season.
Siracusa was 4-for-5 with four runs and an RBI. Loda added a 3-for-5 day with two runs and two RBIs as Central pounded out 13 hits as a team.
Freshman Tim Buchek started and allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings for CCSU. Sophomore Matt Shane tossed 1.2 innings and allowed one run with two strikeouts to earn the win.
