Baseball Wins Third Straight, Downs Saint Peter's 12-4 Sunday
The Blue Devils are back in action on Wednesday against Albany
The Central Connecticut baseball team won its third straight with a 12-4 win over Saint Peter's on Sunday at CCSU Baseball Field in New Britain, CT. Senior Patrick Mitchell pitched a complete game and the Blue Devils banged out 14 hits in the win. Central improves to 6-5 with the win.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Wednesday against Albany at home at 3:00 p.m.
Central got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs with two outs. The Blue Devils got back-to-back singles with two outs and sophomore Matt Bertochi cleared the bases with a double to left field to make it 2-0. Junior Chandler Debrosse would single up the middle to drive in Bertochi and push the CCSU lead to three runs.
Saint Peter's would get a run in the fourth inning. Nicholas Sciubba was hit by a pitch to lead and would move to third base with one out before scoring on Jared Paladino's groundout to make it 3-1.
Central would load the bases with one out in the fifth inning. Sophomore Sam Loda would bring home a run on a ground out to make it 4-1. With the bases still loaded, Bertochi singled to right and drove in a pair of runs to make it 6-1.
After the Peacocks scored a run in the top of the sixth, the Blue Devils came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. CCSU took advantage of drawing a pair of walks and then scored a pair of runs on a SPU throwing error to make it 8-2.
CCSU closed out its scoring with four runs in the eight. The Blue Devils had four straight singles, with freshman Jack Nolan, Loda and sophomore Peyton Stephens each driving in runs. Loda would score on a wild pitch to make it 12-2.
Saint Peter's got a two-run double by Luis Garcia in the ninth to make it 12-4, but Mitchell got a fly out for the game's final out.
Mitchell had an efficient outing, facing just 37 batters. He scattered nine hits and struck out four across 9.0 innings of work.
Bertochi went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Junior Dave Matthews went 2-for-2 and reached base four times on the day, scoring a run. Loda had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Nolan also drove in two runs.
