Mitchell Pitches Baseball Past Mount St. Mary's, 6-1
The Blue Devils travel to UConn on Tuesday.
Senior Patrick Mitchell allowed one run over eight innings, helping Central Connecticut down Mount St. Mary's 6-1 on Sunday in Northeast Conference baseball action in Emmitsburg, MD. The Blue Devils' offense erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth to provide all the cushion needed to sweep the weekend series. Central improves to 18-16 overall and 8-7 in the NEC with the win, while Mount slips to 13-29 overall and 6-12 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils travel to UConn on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Monday, April 22, but was postponed due to rain.
In the third inning Sunday, CCSU managed to push across one run. Junior Chandler Debrosse doubled with one out and came home on a single by sophomore Sam Loda to make it 1-0.
Mitchell would protect the one-run lead, allowing just one runner to advance past second base in the first 7.0 innings. The righthander scattered four hits and held the Mountaineers scoreless until CCSU could add to its lead.
In the eighth, the Blue Devils loaded the bases with no outs and sophomore Jake Siracusa was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and make it 2-0. Sophomore Peyton Stephens followed with a bases-loaded, two-run single to push the Central lead to 4-0. With one out and runners on second and third, sophomore Matt Bertochi laced a double to right center to drive in two runs and make it 6-0.
The Mountaineers would get to Mitchell for one run in the eighth. Mount loaded the bases with one out and a sacrifice fly by Zack Costello plated a run to make it 6-1, but Mitchell avoided further damage with an inning-ending groundball.
Senior Jared Gallagher closed out the game in the ninth, allowing just one hit, while recording a strikeout to seal the 6-1 win.
Mitchell finished with 8.0 innings and scattered six hits and three walks. He struck out three and allowed just one run.
Stephens and Bertochi each drove in two runs, while Debrosse, Loda and junior Dave Matthews had two hits apiece in the win.
