Baseball Drops Midweek Tilt at Fairfield
Central hosts Wagner in a three-game series beginning Friday.
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped a midweek contest at Fairfield, 5-2, on Tuesday at Alumni Diamond. The Stags scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a tie and provide the difference in the game.
The loss drops the Blue Devils to 8-8 overall.
Central hosts Wagner in a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at CCSU Baseball Field on March 29.
CCSU would not lead in the game after Fairfield scored a pair of runs in the second inning to open the scoring. Tom Ryan doubled to left field to drive in a piair and make it 2-0.
The Blue Devils cut the deficit in half in the third inning. Sophomore Peyton Stephens led off with a double to left field before moving to third on a fly out. With one out, freshman James Dolaghan hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Stephens to make it 2-1.
CCSU would tie the game in the fourth inning after putting runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Jack Nolan singled to right field to score Dave Matthews and make it 2-2. Central would put runners on the corners with one out, but a double-play would end the inning.
The Stags would plate three runs in the fifth inning to break the tie. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Fairfield strung together three straight singles, Anthony Boselli driving in two runs on a single to make it 4-2. A pair of errors would extend the inning and account for the third run of the frame crossing home to make it 5-2.
Freshman Tim Buchek started for Central and tossed 4.2 innings. He was charged with four runs on six hits, while recording a pair of strikeouts. Three CCSU relievers combined to throw 3.1 hitless innings.
Central combined for five hits with Nolan going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Stephens had a double and a run scored.
Bryson Cafaro got the win in relief, throwing 2.0 shutout innings. Ian Halpin struck out the side in the ninth inning to get the save. Jack Gethings went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Stags who had six hits as a team.
CCSU will host Wagner for a three-game Northeast Conference series beginning on Friday, March 29.
