Baseball Slowed at UConn Tuesday
The Blue Devils travel to Quinnipiac on Wednesday.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to Connecticut, 9-1, on Tuesday at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, CT. The Blue Devils were held to three hits on the afternoon, sophomore Sam Loda drove in CCSU's lone run. Central slips to 18-17 overall on the season.
The Blue Devils travel to Quinnipiac on Wednesday, May 1.
The Huskies took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs. John Toppa led off with a solo homerun and a pair of RBI-singles later in the inning gave UConn a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Devils would get a run back in the third inning. Sophomore Matt Bertochi was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, sophomore Sam Loda singled through the left side to drive in a run and cut the deficit to 3-1.
UConn added three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, the Huskies got a run on a sacrifice fly before scoring another on a CCSU error. A double by Chris Winkel would score another run to push the lead to 6-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, UConn strung together three straight hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles and extended its lead to 9-1.
Junior Michael Delease got the start for Central. He went 5.0 innings and had three strikeouts.
Loda had a hit and drove in CCSU's only run. Junior Dave Matthews legged out a double and sophomore Jay Devito had a single in his only at bat of the afternoon.
Joe Simone started for UConn and went 3.0 innings. He allowed one run on one hit and had five strikeouts. Angus Mayock tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and had five strikeouts as well.
Anthony Prato had three hits and three runs scored to lead UConn's offense. The Huskies churned out 15 hits on the day.
