Freshman Tyler Latham of the Central Connecticut men's outdoor track and field team was named the Corvias ECAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete and Rookie of the Week for the Division I New England region on Wednesday afternoon via a release by the ECAC front office. Latham, a multi-event athlete, significantly helped the Blue Devils earn their second consecutive Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship this past weekend in Emmitsburg, MD. Central scored 170.5 points at the meet, edging LIU Brooklyn by 9.5 points, to earn the title.
Latham scored in two events for the Blue Devils, contributing 10 points toward the Central total, en route to earning Co-Rookie of the Meet honors. The rookie's best performance came in the javelin throw where he took home the bronze medal, launching the javelin to 58.30 meters (191' 3.50"), to record the third place finish and six points for the team. The distance also qualified Latham to compete in the New England Championships at MIT this upcoming weekend, May 7-9.
The Mystic, CT product then finished off his first outdoor championship meet with a fifth place finish in the 110 meter hurdle finals. The freshman crossed the finish line with a new collegiate personal-best time of 14.82 to pick up the fifth place finish and four points for CCSU. Latham lowered his collegiate-best time by 2.5 tenths of a second in the finals heat and his time also qualified him to compete in the 110 meter hurdles at both the New England Championships this weekend and the ECAC/IC4A Championships on May 15-17.
