Men's T&F Completes URI Coaches Tribute Meet
The Central Connecticut men’s indoor track and field team finished sixth out of nine teams at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team finished sixth out of nine teams at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Mackal Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. The Blue Devils scored 51.50 points in the meet and were led by freshman Tyler Latham on the track and freshman Sam Borecki in the field.

Freshman Tyler Latham recorded the best finish for the Blue Devils on the day with a runner-up finish in the 60 meter hurdles finals. Latham qualified for the finals with a third place finish and time of 8.51 in the preliminary round. He bettered his time in the finals coming in at 8.37 to earn the silver.
Central had a strong showing in the 60 meter dash as they qualified three athletes for the finals heat. Sophomores Jevon Elmore and Kendall Walker, along with freshman David Campbell all raced in the finals heat for CCSU. Elmore placed on the podium with a third place finish and time of 6.99. Campbell and Walker were right behind him with respective fourth and seventh place finishes. Campbell sprinted to a time of 7.09 and Walker finished at 7.22.
Walker was also the top finisher for the Blue Devils in the 200 meter dash. The Southington product recorded an eighth place finish in the event with a time of 23.17.
In the 400 meter dash, Latham and senior Chris Savvidou finished with fourth and sixth place finishes respectively. Latham earned his fourth place result with a time of 50.81 and Savvidou placed sixth with a mark of 50.93.
Junior Malcolm Connor had the best finish in the 500 meter run for CCSU. Connor finished sixth overall with a time of 1:06.52.
Freshman Austin Trainor cracked the top-ten with a ninth place finish in the 1,000 meter run. The rookie completed the race with a time of 2:36.52.
The Blue Devil 4x400 meter relay team of Trainor, Malcolm, and sophomores Tommy Pytel and Dan Baum finished sixth. The team combined for a final time of 3:32.06.
Freshman Sam Borecki led the way for Central in the field events. The rookie cleared 4.35 meters and took the bronze medal in the pole vault to highlight the day for CCSU.
In the long jump, junior John Sudol and sophomore Kwency Crittenden placed 10th and 12th respectively. Sudol leaped to 6.13 meters and Crittenden landed at the 6.07 meter mark.
Sophomore Jeremy Willis threw a new career-best in the weight throw with a distance of 14.22 meters. The mark earned him a 15th place overall finish. Senior Michael Ficorilli finished right behind Willis in 16th place with a distance of 14.13 meters.
Crittenden logged the best finish in the triple jump with a ninth place finish after leaping to 13.40 meters.
Freshman Mike Lang cleared a new personal-best of 1.89 meters in the high jump and earned a fourth place finish as a result. Junior Dashawn Putman also cleared 1.89 meters, but tied for fifth place and freshman Joshua Walker-Thomas rose above 1.84 meters to tie for seventh place.
In the shot put, freshman Zach Torro led the way for the Blue Devils with a 12th place finish. He threw to a distance of 13.75 meters. Ficorilli took 14th with a distance of 13.52 meters.
Rhode Island won the meet with a score of 180.50 points in 17 scored events. They were followed by Brown (140), New Hampshire (76), American Int'l (76) and Stonehill (54) to round out the top-five. The Blue Devils were sixth with 51.50 points, ahead of Providence (40), UMass Amherst (20) and Bryant (18).
The Blue Devil men's indoor track and field team will return to Boston University, next weekend, as they continue action at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on February 14th.
