Latham Tabbed NEC Rookie of the Week
Freshman Tyler Latham was named the NEC Rookie of the Week by the Northeast Conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman multi-event athlete Tyler Latham of the Central Connecticut men's outdoor track and field team was named the NEC Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. The rookie helped power the Blue Devils to a fourth place finish out of 15 teams at the 5th Annual Yellow Jacket Invitational at AIC in Springfield, MA on Saturday. Latham recorded three top-five finishes and accounted for 21 of the 78.5 points the Blue Devils scored at the meet.
In Latham's opening outdoor meet of the season, he swiped a pair of silver medals in both the 110 meter hurdles and the javelin and recorded a fourth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. In the 110 meter hurdles, Latham crossed the finish line second with a blistering time of 15.12. He picked up his second runner-up finish after he launched the javelin to 60.20 meters (197' 6"), becoming the first NEC thrower to hit the 60-meter mark this season while also surpassing the automatic qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships by 1.50 meters. The Nutmeg State product capped off his excellent day with a fourth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, coming in at 56.65.
Latham and the Blue Devils will continue the 2015 outdoor track and field season this weekend at three different locations. Some members of the team will be competeing at the North Florida Twilight meet in Jacksonville, FL on Friday, while others will travel to either Bucknell for the Bison Outdoor Classic or UMass-Amherst for the Minutemen Invitational on Saturday.
