Fruster Named Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Senior Jamal Fruster was tabbed NEC Athlete of the Week by the Northeast Conference on Tuesday.
Senior Jamal Fruster of the Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team was named NEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Fruster recorded the best finish of the day for the Blue Devils on the track at the NYC Gotham Cup last Friday, Jan. 16, claiming third place in the 400 meter dash.
Fruster contested the 400 meter dash for the first time this season and the result was a league-leading time. The East Hartford product, who finished his signature event in a first-place dead heat at the 2014 NEC Indoor Championships, crossed the line in 48.62 seconds on Friday. The mark earned him a bronze medal and stood as the second-fastest time by a collegiate competitor at the meet. Fruster's time was also well under the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships and was a top-75 time in all of NCAA Division I so far this season.
Fruster and the Blue Devils will return to action this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Rhode Island for the Sorlien Memorial Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 am.
