Men's T&F Completes Day One of NEICAAA Championships
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team completed the first day of competition at the NEICAAA Championships on Friday.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team completed the first day of competition at the 47th annual New England NEICAAA Championships on Friday. The two-day championships are being held at Boston University inside the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The Blue Devils are currently tied for 10th place with six points out of 21 teams from across the entire Northeast.
Freshman Tyler Latham is one of 12 athletes competing in the heptathlon at the meet. He currently sits in fourth place after four-of-seven events with 2,782 points. Latham kicked off the meet in the 60 meter dash event of the heptathlon and recorded a fourth place finish with a time of 7.33. He followed that up with another fourth place finish in the long jump, setting a new personal-record of 6.57 meters. In the shot put, the rookie set another personal-best, throwing to a distance of 12.39 meters for a third place finish. In the final heptathlon event of the day, Latham picked up a tied for sixth place finish after clearing 1.85 meters in the high jump.
Freshman Sam Borecki finished on the podium for the Blue Devils in the pole vault, recording a personal-best clearance in route to a third place finish. Borecki cleared 4.65 meters to set the personal record and just missed breaking the school record by .02 meters (4.67m). The rookie's finish also picked up all six of the points for CCSU's team score on the day.
Senior Jordan Watkins finished eighth in the preliminary round of the 60 meter hurdles for the Blue Devils with a time of 8.37 and qualified for the semifinal round on Saturday.
Jevon Elmore also picked up an eighth place finish for CCSU, but in the 60 meter dash preliminary round. The sophomore crossed the finish line at 6.94 to earn the finish and a spot in the semifinal round on Saturday.
In the 200 meter dash, sophomore Kendall Walker recorded a 21st place finish with a time of 22.50.
Senior sprinter Jamal Fruster advanced to the 400 meter final on Saturday after recording a fifth place finish in the preliminary round. Fruster came in at 48.73 to earn the finish and a spot in the finals. Sophomore Zach Andrews also competed in the 400 meter prelims. Andrews finished 13th overall with a time of 49.56.
Junior Malcolm Connor recorded a 13th place finish out of 30 competitors in the 500 meter dash preliminary round, coming in at 1:06.02.
Northeastern currently leads the New England Championships, earning 38 points on the first day of competition. Southern Connecticut is in second with 20 points, followed by Amherst with 18 points, Boston with 16 and Bates with 13 to round out the top-5.
MIT and Colby are tied for sixth with 10 points, ahead of Southern Maine (9) and Stonehill (7). The Blue Devils are tied for tenth with New Hampshire with 6 points and lead Rhode Island (5), Vermont (5), UMass Amherst (5), Middlebury (5), Bryant (5) and UMass Lowell (5).
American Int'l is tied for eighteenth with RIC at 4 points followed by Holy Cross and New Haven with 2 points to round out the field.
The Blue Devils will complete the second and final day of competition on Saturday at the New England Championships. The action is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's heptathlon. Here is a link to Saturday's heat sheets.
