Alexander Earns Two Titles at NEC's
Sam Alexander earned gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the NEC Championships.
The Central Connecticut men's track & field team sealed a third place finish at the 2012 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday. The team put up a total of 132 points in their performance. Mount St. Mary's hosted the conference championship in Emmitsburg, MD.
Monmouth earned gold at the meet winning the championship with 132 team points. LIU Brooklyn edged Central by six points posting 138. The Blue Devils placed ahead of fourth place Sacred Heart (95) and fifth place Mount St. Mary's (83).
Senior Sam Alexander took home both the 10,000m and 5,000m individual championships at the meet. On Saturday, the senior harrier claimed gold in the 10,000m crossing the line at 31:36.04. Alexander repeated his gold performance on Sunday winning the 5,000m in a time of 14:36.45.
Junior sprinter Aaron Radden earned gold in the 200m claiming the individual championship with a time of 21.18. Radden was .02 seconds short of a second individual title finishing second in the 100m crossing the line at 10.58.
Junior Colby Delbene and freshman Brian Biekert competed in the final round of the 1,500m on Sunday. Delbene finished as the event's runner-up in a time of 3:50.71 and Biekert finished sixth in 3:58.32. Delbene also finished second behind teammate Alexander in the 5,000m crossing the line at 14:39.38.
Freshman Jamal Fruster ran a personal best time of 48.01 in the 400m which placed him third in the event. Also marking down a third place finish was junior Nick Lindblom who ran the 400m hurdles in 54.64.
A pair of Blue Devils cracked the top-five in the 3,000m steeplechase. Freshman Patrick Hubbell placed second (9:22.88) and senior Anthony Gonsalves fourth (9:25.68).
In the relay events, the Blue Devils placed third in the 4x100m (41.72), sixth in the 4x400m (3:18.74), and fourth in the 4x800m (7:49.92).
After claiming an individual title in the high jump on Saturday, senior Matt Berube contended in the triple jump on Sunday placing third in the event with a distance of 14.59m (47'10.50").
