Alexander Grabs Athlete of the Week
Senior Sam Alexander posted an amazing 29:21.06 time in the 10,000 meter.
Central Connecticut senior Sam Alexander was named Northeast Conference Athlete of the Week on Tuesday evening. The Waterford, CT, native traveled to the West Coast last week in search of a NCAA Regional qualifying time.
Alexander's recent 10K performance at Stanford's Palo Alto Invitational is evidence that the NEC Outdoor Championship meet record will be in jeopardy come May 5-6 in Emmitsburg, MD. The Blue Devil harrier, who claimed the individual title at the 2011 NEC Cross Country Championships, finished the 10,000m run in 29:21.06 to immediately catapult himself atop the NEC leader board.
The time, which is far better than the qualifying standard for the regional IC4A Championships, ranks ninth overall in the entire NCAA East Region. Moreover, Alexander's latest 10K performance broke a 30-plus year old program record and is also 10 seconds lower than the meet record that FDU's Sam Chelenga ran at the 2007 NEC Outdoor Championships.
Alexander and the Blue Devils will be in split-squad action on April 14th, members of the squad will be competing at the UMass Invitational and at the Bucknell Invitational.
