Lockery Earns Summer Postseason Honors
A complete roundup of the Blue Devils in summer league action.
The summer baseball season has concluded and Dean Lockery picked up a pair of New England Collegiate Baseball League honors. Lockery, who played for the Keene Swamp Bats, was named All-NECBL First Team at shortstop and also earned the league's Most Improved Player award.
Lockery tied for first in the league with 35 runs scored and was fourth in hits (50). He batted .305 with four doubles, two triples, nine homeruns and 25 RBIs. He led Keene to a playoff appearance and 20 wins on the season.
Coming off a Northeast Conference championship, Dylan Maher and Patrick Mitchell helped their summer squads to league titles. Below is a roundup of the Blue Devils's summer performances:
FUTURES COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Tom Curtin - Bristol Blues
Curtin posted a league-leading 12 saves in 16 appearances and was named to the West Division All-Star Team. In 15.2 innings, he went 2-1 with 22 strikeouts against just five walks and posted a 1.15 ERA.
Brandon Fox - Bristol Blues
Fox appeared in seven games, making six starts. He did not allow an earned run across 14.2 innings of work. He went 0-1 and rang up six strikeouts.
Mitch Guilmette - Bristol Blues
Guilmette hit a team-leading .374 to power the Blues into the FCBL playoffs. In 27 games, he scored 25 runs and drove in 16 RBIs with a homerun, triple and four doubles. Along with CCSU teammate he was was named to the West Division All-Star Team.
Nick Garland - Brockton Rox
Garland was the starting catcher on the East Division All-Stars and helped the Rox earn the top seed for the league playoffs. He hit .324 on the year with four homeruns, eight doubles and a triple. He drove in 24 runs, while scoring 16 more.
Dylan Maher - Nashua Silver Knights
Maher helped the Silver Knights win a second straight league title. He played in 10 games after joining the team and hit .342 with two homers and 10 RBIs. He scored five runs and added a double.
Chris Kanios - Seacoast Mavericks
Kanios played in 42 games and scored 17 runs and drove in 18 RBIs. He hit a team-high four triples to go with four doubles and four home runs, while recoring six stolen bases.
Ryan Schworer - Seacoast Mavericks
Schworer tossed 26.1 innings in 17 appearances out of the bullpen. He had 20 strikeouts and recorded one save.
NEW ENGLAND COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Dean Lockery - Keene Swamp Bats
Lockery tied for first in the league with 35 runs scored and was fourth in hits (50). He batted .305 with four doubles, two triples, nine homeruns and 25 RBIs. He led Keene to a playoff appearance and 20 wins on the season.
Mike Appel - Mystic Schooners
Appel tossed 12 games for the Schooners and posted a 1.66 ERA in 21.2 innings. He went 4-1 with 23 strikeouts, while surrendering just 11 hits. The Schooners qualified for the NECBL playoffs.
TT Bowens - Mystic Schooners
Bowens played in 11 games and hit a pair of homeruns. He had four runs scored and four runs batted in to go with a stolen base.
Buddy Dewaine - Mystic Schooners
Dewaine was a two-way contributor for the Schooners after joining the club. In four appearances on the mound, he did not allow a run, while striking out six hitters. He collected four hits at the plate, driving in one run and scoring another.
Ron Grant - Mystic Schooners
Grant made five starts and eight appearances overall. In 24.2 innings of work, he recorded 21 strikeouts and posted a 2-2 record.
Jared Gallagher - Mystic Schooners
Gallagher tossed 16.1 innings in 11 relief outings. He went 2-0 with a save and 14 strikeouts against four walks.
NEW YORK COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Arik Sypher - Rome Generals
Sypher was named to the East squad for the NYCBL All-Star Game. In seven outings on the season he went 3-2 with a 1.55 ERA. He posted a 34-7 strikeout-walk ratio in 34.2 innings of work and had a season-high nine strikeouts against Cortland on July 3.
PERFECT GAME COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Michael Delease - Adirondack Trailblazers
Delease made eight appearances, including five starts, for the Trailblazers. In 36.2 innings of work, he struck out 24 batters, including a season-high five in 4.0 innings of work in his last outing.
Austin Salnitis - Utica Blue Sox
Salnitis ranked second on the team with 14 appearances. He tossed 18.1 innings and struck out 14 batters, while closing out a team-high four saves.
SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Patrick Mitchell - Pompano Beach Clippers
Mitchell helped the Clippers win the SFCBL Championship. He tossed 17.1 innings across seven outings, including a start. He posted 17 strikeouts and went 2-0 on the summer, helping the Clippers to a 25-10 record.
VIRGINIA BEACH COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
James Jakuba - Fightin' Crabs
Jakuba tossed 26.0 innings across six games, including three starts. He posted a 2-0 record with a 2.077 ERA and 23 strikeouts and helped the Fightin' Crabs (18-8) to the semifinals of the league playoffs.
There are also six Blue Devils currently playing in the professional ranks (stats through August 20).
Casey Brown (Lakewood BlueClaws - Philadelphia Class A) - Brown has appeared in 19 games out of the bullpen, posting a solid 2.86 ERA and going 2-2. He has tossed 37.0 innings, limiting opposing batters to a .253 average and posting 23 strikeouts.
Ryan Costello (AZL Mariners - Seattle Rookie League) - Costello has batted .286 with five homers and 26 runs batted in across 33 games. He opened his professional career with a homerun in his first at bat and then hit home runs in back-to-back games to open August. He has added 21 runs scored with seven doubles and two triples for the defending league-champions.
Nick Neumann (Greensboro Grasshoppers - Miami Class A) - Neumann has spent time at two levels this summer and gone 2-1 in 17 appearances, including one start, and tossed 27.2 innings overall this season. Since joining the Grasshoppers, he has a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings across four games.
Connor Fitzsimons (AZL Angels - Los Angeles Angels Rookie League) - Fitzsimons has played in 25 games and scored 14 runs, while throwing out nine baserunners and posting a .988 fielding percentage. In his last 10 games, he has batted .303 at the plate and swatted his first professional home run on July 9.
Evan Scribner (Seattle Mariners) - Scribner has thrown in eight games this season, but is currently on the 60-day disabled list. He struck out six, while walking none, in 7.1 innings of work before his injury.
J.P. Sportman (Midland RockHounds - Oakland Double-A) - Sportman hit his 11th home run of the season on Sunday and has played in 118 games for the RockHounds. He ranks second on the team in hits (131), RBIs (72) and runs scored (66). He has added five triples and 26 doubles, while hitting .281 on the season. Sportman was named to the Texas League All-Star Game and went 2-for-4 leading the South to a 10-3 win.
