The Central Connecticut baseball team closed out the weekend with a 3-0 win at LIU Brooklyn in Northeast Conference action on Sunday at LIU Field. The shutout was the Blue Devils' second of the weekend as they improve to 16-12 overall and 7-3 in NEC play.
Freshman Michael Delease tossed 5.0 shutout innings in his first career NEC start and allowed just three hits. He struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Patrick Mitchell picked up his second save of the year, allowing just two hits, with three strikeouts and a walk over 4.0 innings of work.
The Blue Devils got a two-out double from junior Ryan Costello in the top of the first inning. He came around to score when freshman TT Bowens reached base on a throwing error and made the score 1-0.
Central doubled the lead in the top of the fourth when Bowens, junior Mitch Guilmette each walked and senior Tyler Coleman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Senior Franklin Jennings followed with a fielder's choice ground out that brought Bowens home to make it 2-0.
That would be more than enough support for Delease who did not allow a hit in the first 3.0 innings. The Blackbirds only had two runners reach second base all afternoon as they left six runners on base and grounded into two double-plays.
CCSU tacked on a run in the sixth inning. Jennings was hit by a pitch to lead off and advanced on a sacrifice bunt before moving to third on a failed pick off. He came home to score on a balk to make it 3-0.
Nick Freijomil started and took the loss for LIU Brooklyn. He allowed three runs, two earned, in 6.0 innings. He walked four and gave up three hits, while striking out three.
The Blue Devils finished with four hits as a team. Jennings went 1-for-3 and had the only RBI and added a stolen base and a run scored.
