Baseball Outscores Hartford, 11-10, Wednesday
Head coach Charlie Hickey earned career win 599 with the victory.
The Central Connecticut baseball team bested Hartford, 11-10, on Wednesday afternoon at Fiondella Field in West Hartford, CT, to give head coach Charlie Hickey his 599th career win. The Blue Devils pounded out 20 hits as a team, including a pair of homeruns from junior Ryan Costello.
CCSU improved to 29-20 on the season, while Hartford is now 20-25.
Costello finished the game 2-for-3 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs on two solo homeruns. Seven Blue Devils recorded at least two hits in the game, with senior Franklin Jennings and freshman Chris Kanios each recording four-hit days.
The Blue Devils used five pitchers on the afternoon with freshman Arik Sypher picking up the win. He allowed just one runs in 2.2 innings of work, while recording a strikeout. Senior Nick Plachno picked up his third save, throwing a scoreless ninth.
Costello gave CCSU a lead with a solo homer in the first, but the Hawks would score five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
The Blue Devils would chip away at the lead with two runs in the second. Junior Dylan Maher would bring home a run on a groundout and sophomore Ken Wright singled in a run to make it 5-3.
Jennings would cut the deficit to one run in the top of the third with a ground out, but Hartford came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-4.
Costello's second homerun of the day in the fourth and a two-run single by freshman Buddy Dewaine in the sixth would make it 7-7.
The Hawks regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but CCSU would get a run in the seventh on a single by Maher to make it 9-8. The Blue Devils would then take the lead in the eighth on RBI singles from Kanios and Jennings to make it 10-9.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth would tie the game for Hartford, but Central would score the game-winning run in the top of the ninth when senior Tyler Coleman would single to score junior Dean Lockery to make it 11-10.
The Blue Devils close the regular season with a four-game league series against FDU beginning Friday. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
