Blue Devils Baseball Update
An update on Blue Devils playing in summer leagues and professionally
The summer baseball season is heading to a close for 16 current CCSU baseball players with the final weeks of the regular-season and playoffs on the schedule. Six former Blue Devils are also currently in action in the professional ranks, and in total six Blue Devils have earned All-Star recognition this summer.
The current list of summer league players and a brief update (stats through Aug. 2):
FUTURES COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE (regular season concludes on Aug. 6)
Tom Curtin - Bristol Blues
Curtin has posted a league-leading 11 saves in 13 appearances and was named to the West Division All-Star Team. In 12.2 innings, he's gone 1-1 with 17 strikeouts against just three walks and has a 1.42 ERA.
Brandon Fox - Bristol Blues
Fox has appeared in six games, making five starts. He's tossed 12.1 innings without allowing an earned run. He is 0-1 and has allowed just seven hits and has five strikeouts.
Mitch Guilmette - Bristol Blues
Guilmette has hit a team-leading .386 to lead the Blues' lineup. In 25 games, he has scored 25 runs and has 16 RBIs with a homerun, triple and four doubles. He was named to the West Division All-Star Team via the fan vote having scored 16 runs with one home run and seven runs batted in.
Nick Garland - Brockton Rox
Garland earned a spot on the East Division All-Stars and has helped the Rox to a first-place standing entering the final weekend. He is batting .303 in 27 games and has four homeruns and 20 RBIs. He scored 13 runs and has six doubles.
Dylan Maher - Nashua Silver Knights
Maher is hitting .345 in seven games since coming to the Silver Knights. He has hit a pair of home runs and knocked in nine runs, while scoring five more.
Chris Kanios - Seacoast Mavericks
Kanios has played in 39 games and has scored 15 runs and driven in 17 RBIs. He has a team-high three triples to go with four doubles and four home runs, while recoring six stolen bases.
Ryan Schworer - Seacoast Mavericks
Schworer has tossed 25.0 innings in 16 appearances out of the bullpen. He has 20 strikeouts and recorded one save.
NEW ENGLAND COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Dean Lockery - Keene Swamp Bats
Lockery has batted .305 at the plate, while ranking third in the league with nine home runs. Lockery has scored a team-high 35 runs and driven in 25 more, while hitting four doubles and two triples. He has 50 hits in 42 games. He was named the starter for the North Division at shortstop in the NECBL All-Star Game. The Swamp Bats begin play in the playoffs on Aug. 3.
Mike Appel - Mystic Schooners
Appel has tossed 12 games for the Schooners and has a 1.66 ERA in 21.2 innings. He has gone 4-1 with 23 strikeouts, while surrendering just 11 hits. The Schooners (17-7) begin play in the league playoffs on Aug. 3.
TT Bowens - Mystic Schooners
Bowens played in 11 games and hit a pair of homeruns. He had four runs scored and four runs batted in to go with a stolen base.
Buddy Dewaine - Mystic Schooners
Dewaine has been a two-way contributor for the Schooners since joining the club. In four appearances on the mound, he has not allowed a run, while striking out six hitters. He has collected four hits at the plate, driving in one run and scoring another. The Schooners (17-7) begin play in the league playoffs on Aug. 3.
Ron Grant - Mystic Schooners
Grant made five starts and eight appearances overall. In 24.2 innings of work, he has 21 strikeouts and posted a 2-2 record. The Schooners (17-7) begin play in the league playoffs on Aug. 3.
Jared Gallagher - Mystic Schooners
Gallagher has tossed 16.1 innings in 11 relief outings. He has gone 2-0 with a save and has 14 strikeouts against four walks. The Schooners (17-7) begin play in the league playoffs on Aug. 3.
NEW YORK COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Arik Sypher - Rome Generals
Sypher was named to the East squad for the NYCBL All-Star Game. In seven outings on the season he went 3-2 with a 1.55 ERA. He posted a 34-7 strikeout-walk ratio in 34.2 innings of work and had a season-high nine strikeouts against Cortland on July 3.
PERFECT GAME COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Michael Delease - Adirondack Trailblazers
Delease made eight appearances, including five starts, for the Trailblazers. In 36.2 innings of work, he struck out 24 batters, including a season-high five in 4.0 innings of work in his last outing.
Austin Salnitis - Utica Blue Sox
Salnitis ranked second on the team with 14 appearances. He tossed 18.1 innings and struck out 14 batters, while closing out a team-high four saves.
SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Patrick Mitchell - Pompano Beach Clippers
Mitchell helped the Clippers win the SFCBL Championship. He tossed 17.1 innings across seven outings, including a start. He posted 17 strikeouts and went 2-0 on the summer, helping the Clippers to a 25-10 record.
VIRGINIA BEACH COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
James Jakuba - Fightin' Crabs
Jakuba tossed 26.0 innings across six games, including three starts. He posted a 2-0 record with a 2.077 ERA and 23 strikeouts and helped the Fightin' Crabs (18-8) to the semifinals of the league playoffs.
There are also six Blue Devils currently playing in the professional ranks (stats through August 2).
Casey Brown (Lakewood BlueClaws - Philadelphia Class A) - Brown has appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen, posting a solid 2.84 ERA and going 2-1 with a save. He has tossed 25.1 innings, limiting opposing batters to a .250 average and posting 14 strikeouts.
Ryan Costello (AZL Mariners - Seattle Rookie League) - Costello hit home runs in back-to-back games to open August. Since homering in his first professional at bat for the defending league champions, he has recorded a .305 average, swatting five home runs, while driving in 19 runs and scoring 14. He also has three doubles and a triple for the first-place AZL Mariners.
Nick Neumann (Greensboro Grasshoppers - Miami Class A) - Neumann has spent time at two levels this summer and gone 2-1 in 17 appearances, including one start, and tossed 27.2 innings overall this season. Since joining the Grasshoppers, he has a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings across four games.
Connor Fitzsimons (AZL Angels - Los Angeles Angels Rookie League) - Fitzsimons has played in 17 games and scored eight runs, while throwing out eight baserunners and posting a .988 fielding percentage. Since July 17, he has batted .294 at the plate and swatted his first professional home run on July 9.
Evan Scribner (Seattle Mariners) - Scribner has thrown in eight games this season, but is currently on the 60-day disabled list. He struck out six, while walking none, in 7.1 innings of work before his injury.
J.P. Sportman (Midland RockHounds - Oakland Double-A) - Sportman has played in 105 games for the RockHounds. He ranks second on the team in hits (120), RBIs (60) and runs scored (59). He has eight home runs, five triples and 23 doubles, while hitting .290 on the season. Sportman was named to the Texas League All-Star Game and went 2-for-4 leading the South to a 10-3 win.
