Costello Earns Weekly Northeast Conference Baseball Honor
Central begins play at the NEC Tournament on Thursday.
Junior Ryan Costello was named Co-Northeast Conference baseball Player of the Week on Monday it was announced by the league office. Costello helped power the Blue Devils to five wins, including a four-game sweep of NEC foe Fairleigh Dickinson, and shared the award with Wagner's Anthony Godino.
Costello scored at least one run and reached base safely no fewer than two times in all five games last week. He collected five extra-base hits, including three round-trippers, and posted a 1.053 slugging percentage last week. He batted .474 (9-for-19) with three homers, two doubles, five walks, one hit-by-pitch and 10 runs scored. Eight of his 10 RBI came during the four-game set against FDU. After launching two home runs in an 11-10 mid-week win over Hartford, Costello doubled, walked and scored one run in a 14-6, series-opening triumph versus Fairleigh Dickinson. In Game 2, a 9-4 victory for the Blue Devils, he produced run-scoring singles during the third and fifth frames. He laced a two-RBI double to right-centerfield to even the score at 3-3 in the third inning of Game 3. One frame later, Costello walked and came around to score during a five-run barrage that sent the Blue Devils on their way to a 10-5 win. He drove in four runs and reached base safely four times in the series finale, a 17-3 triumph. Costello, who scored the game's first run following a first-inning base on balls, launched a three-run home run in the eighth inning as part of his 3-for-4 day at the plate.

For the week as a team, CCSU batted .429 and scored 61 runs. Seniors Franklin Jennings and Tyler Coleman earned NEC Prime Performer recognition for hitting .591 and .500, respectively

The Blue Devils finished the regular season 33-20 overall and 21-7 in Northeast Conference play. They are the #2 seed in the NEC Tournament, which they begin play in on Thursday at 4 p.m. vs. #3 Wagner in the first round at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Fans can watch the game live on NEC Front Row.
