The Central Connecticut baseball team rallied to win in extra-innings on Saturday, defeating Marist, 3-2, at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The Blue Devils scored a run in the top of the ninth and then another in the 10th inning to get the victory.
Central improves to 6-6 on the year, while the Red Foxes slide to 6-5 overall.
Senior Nick Landell had two hits and drove in the game-tying run, while classmate Franklin Jennings and junior Ryan Costello each added two hits as the Blue Devils pounded out 10 hits as a team.
Junior Cody Brown got the win in relief. He threw 3.0 innings and did not allow a hit, while walking just one and striking out four. Sophomore Jared Gallagher picked up his third save of the year, allowing just one hit in an inning of work. Senior Andrew Hinckley started and went 6.0 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. He has at least six strikeouts in each of his four outings this season.
CCSU opened the scoring in the top of the first. Jennings led off with a single and after the Red Foxes recorded two outs, he came around to score on a triple by Costello to make it 1-0.
The score would remain unchanged until the bottom of the sixth when Randy Taveras singled and moved to third on a steal and a passed ball. Following a walk, Taveras came across to tie the game on a wild pitch with one out. Marist took the lead on a double by Matt Iantosca to make it 2-1.
The Blue Devils forced extra-innings in the ninth when freshman Chris Kanios pinch-hit to lead off and delivered a triple to right field. Following a ground out, Landell laid down a bunt single to first base to score Kanios and make it 2-2.
In the top of the 10th senior Tyler Coleman and junior Dean Lockery delivered back-to-back singles to lead off. An infield single by Costello would load the bases with no outs. Freshman Buddy Dewaine brought in the go-ahead run on a ground out to make it 3-2. The Blue Devils were unable to push across any more runs, but Gallagher worked around a lead off single and a hit batter with two outs to nail down the save.
Taveras had three hits and a run to lead the Marist offense.
