Saunders Tabbed NEC Rookie of the Week
Ronea Saunders earns first NEC honor.
Freshman Ronea Saunders of the Central Connecticut women's track & field team earned her first Northeast Conference honor on Tuesday. The freshman jumper was honored as this week's NEC Rookie of the Week for her performance in the high jump at the Best Western/North Florida Invitational on Saturday, March 31st.
Saunders opened up her outdoor campaign by recording a 1.72m height in the high jump at North Florida, good for fifth place. The mark was just one centimeter shy of the NEC Outdoor Championship meet record.
The freshman was one of three Blue Devils to compete at the North Florida Invitational and the only athlete from the women's track & field team to make an appearance. Saunders finished behind only Charleston's Emily Smith (1.72m), Coastal Carolina's Kierra Gabe (1.72m), Virginia's Pearl Bickersteth (1.72m), and South Carolina's Jeannelle Scheper (1.77m).
Saunders will be back in the field this weekend as the Blue Devils compete at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, MA on Friday, April 6th.
