Baseball Falls Twice to Sacred Heart on Saturday in New Britain
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped both ends of a home doubleheader on Saturday against Sacred Heart. The Pioneers took the first game 11-4, and won the second 8-6. With the losses the Blue Devils fall to 23-20-1 overall and 15-12 in Northeast Conference action. The Pioneers are now 26-20 overall and 18-9 in league action.

In the first game, the Pioneers scored three runs in the top of
the second inning to take the early lead. Two of the runs were
unearned following an error in the field by the Blue Devils. Dave
Boisture, MJ Schifano and JJ Edwards each had an RBI for Sacred
Heart.
They stretched the lead to 5-0 in the third with two runs off Blue
Devil start Dave
Krasnowiecki. Dan Perez drove in the first run, and the second
scored on a fielding error by the pitcher.
Steve Tedesco led off the fourth inning with a home run, and with
one out Robert Griffith hit a solo homer to left to make it
7-0.
Central got on the board on an RBI single from senior Sean
Miller-Jones in the bottom of the fourth inning. Griffith had
a bases clearing triple in the fifth inning, highlighting a
four-run frame for the Pioneers as they pushed the lead to
11-1.
Central scored three in the seventh inning to cut the score to
11-4. Junior Jake
Matuszak drove in a run and freshman J.P.
Sportman drove in two with a two-out single.
In game two the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off of
Blue Devil starter Nick
Neumann. Two more runs in the third inning made it 5-0.
Central scored six runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. Sportman drove in the first run and a sacrifice fly from senior Normand Gosselin plated the second. The third scored when junior Danny Hickey bunted for a single, and then Miller-Jones scored on a throwing error from the SHU catcher, making it 5-3. With two outs freshman Anthony Turgeon singled in two more runs to tie the game. Senior Pat Epps hit his second double of the inning and scored the sixth run of the inning. Central batted around in the inning, scoring six runs on seven hits, as 11 men came to the plate.
The Pioneers tied it at 6-6 on an RBI double from MJ Schifano with two outs in the sixth inning. An RBI single from Hunter Phillips gave the Pioneers the 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh. Another run scored to make it 8-6.
The Blue Devils and Pioneers will finish the weekend series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
