Baseball Splits With Wagner on Saturday on Staten Island
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Wagner on Saturday, winning the first game 8-7, and dropping the second 6-4. With the split the Blue Devils are not 6-7-1 overall and 4-2 in Northeast Conference play. The two teams will finish the weekend series with a pair of games on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader on
the road at Wagner on Saturday, winning the first game 8-7, and
dropping the second 6-4. With the split the Blue Devils are not
6-7-1 overall and 4-2 in Northeast Conference play. The two teams
will finish the weekend series with a pair of games on Sunday
beginning at 12 p.m.
The Blue Devils held off a late run by the Seahawks in the first
game, winning 8-7. Despite five runs in the bottom of the ninth
inning, the Blue Devils won for the fourth time in five league
games.
Sophomore Todd
Savatsky moved to 3-0 on the year in game one. He pitched
seven innings allowing just two runs and four hits. His three wins
lead the team this season.
Central scored two runs in the first and one in the third to take a
3-0 lead. They added one in the seventh to make it 4-0. The
Seahawks scored two off Savatsky in the bottom of the inning to cut
it to 4-2. The Blue Devils answered, plating three in the eighth
and one more in the ninth to make it 8-2. Wagner scored five in
the ninth to make it 8-7.
Freshman righty Josh
Ingham earned his first collegiate save, coming in the ninth
inning and shutting the door on the Seahawks. He allowed a pair of
hits and struck out one.
Senior Pat Epps was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and two doubles in
the victory. He reached base in four of his five plate
appearances, including a pair of walks and a sacrifice. Freshman
Dylan
DelaCruz was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the victory. Leadoff man
Jake
Matuszak had three hits and scored twice. Freshman J.P.
Sportman, senior Sean
Miller-Jones and junior Danny
Hickey all had an RBI in the win.
In the second game freshmen A.J.
Lowers and Anthony
Turgeon each had a two-out RBI in a two-run second inning to
give Central a 2-0 lead. Wagner took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of
the inning with four runs off Blue Devil starter Dave
Krasnowiecki.
The Blue Devils tied it up in the fourth inning when Turgeon drove
in his second run and Matuszak's bunt single scored a run. Wagner
took a 6-4 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth
innings.
Turgeon finished 3-for-3 with two RBI in the second game. Matuszak
had three more hits and an RBI and finished the day with six hits
in the two games.
The two teams will finish the weekend series with a doubleheader on
Sunday at 12 p.m. The first game will be seven innings followed by
a nine-inning nightcap.
