Freshman Whelan Finishes Fifth at Rutgers
Freshman Tara Whelan ties for fifth place overall
Freshman Tara Whelan tied for fifth place overall after the second and final round of the Rutgers Invitation on Saturday. Whelan followed up her first round 75 with a second round 76 to post the highest finish of her freshman campaign for the Blue Devils. Central shot a second round score of 332 and tied for 11th place in the 17 team field.
Whelan's total of 151 was good for fifth place, just seven shots off the lead.
Sophomore Ella Williams was the second finisher for the Blue Devils shooting an 81 on the second day of the tournament and finishing with a score of 165. Freshman Cecy Gutierrez shot an 85 on Monday and tied for 53rd place. Junior Sarah Boden finished in a tie for 71st (171) and sophomore Kaitlyn Stoddart finished in a tie for 73rd place with a 172.
The Blue Devils shot a two-day total of 650, finishing in a tie for 11th place with Quinnipiac.
LIU Brooklyn won the tournament, played at the Rutgers University Golf Course in Piscataway Township, NJ. LIU shot 608 as a team, followed by Rutgers (609), St. Francis U (620) and Penn (637). The Blue Devils were just 10 strokes out of the top five.
