Offensive Explosion Lifts Women's Soccer To NEC Victory Over Delaware State

The host Central Connecticut State University women's soccer team scored four goals in the first 22:30 of play and never looked back, as CCSU defeated the visiting Hornets of Delaware State University, 6-0, in New Britain on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils, winners of three matches in a row, are now 3-1-0 in conference play and 3-7-1 overall; while Delaware State falls to 0-3-1 in the NEC and the Hornets are 0-11-1.

• CCSU earned a pair of corners in the first 1:27 of action.
• Aoife Horgan forced a fine save by the DSU keeper Katie Knapp with a dive in just the contest's second minute.
• Emma Radoncic put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0 when she finished a beautiful cross from Leah Howe in the 11th minute for her first goal of the 2024 campaign.
• Riley Powers would then put home a pair of goals scoring in the 20th and 22nd minutes to make the CCSU advantage 3-0. Powers now has three goals this season
• That score would increase to 4-0 1:24 later on a strike to the upper corner of the net by Kiley Yepes.

• CCSU goalkeeper Kayleigh Smith who entered the match to begin the second half made her team's second save of the afternoon and first of her career just 14 seconds into the final frame, and she made her best save of the afternoon to preserve her team's clean sheet with just under six minutes to play.
• Daniela De Souza extended the Central lead to 5-0 when she finished a cross from Aoife Horgan
• Charlotte Simmons scored off a corner from Gia Edwards at the 76:34 to make the score Blue Devils 6 Hornets 0 which would be the final.

• Central outshot Delaware State, 22-5 on the day and finished with a 12-1 advantage in corners.
• Five different players had goals in Sunday's victory, and eight different Blue Devils registered points in the win.
• Riley Powers with four, Emma Radoncic, Charlotte Simmons and Daniela De Souza with three apiece plus Kiley Yepes and Leah Howe with two each, all had multi-point days for the winners
• Taylor DeFlorio and Kayleigh Smith shared the shutout over the Hornets with Smith making three saves in the final 45 minutes and DeFlorio making one stop in the first half.
• 20 different student-athletes saw action for Central on Sunday.
• CCSU has now won three matches in a row.
• The six goals are the most the Blue Devils have tallied in a match since they netted five last season against both Delaware State and Fairfield.
