Cavanaugh, McLaughlin Sweep NEC Women's Soccer Awards
CCSU opens conference play at Robert Morris on Sunday.
Senior Ashley Cavanaugh and freshman Roma McLaughlin of the Central Connecticut women's soccer team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards it was announced on Tuesday. Cavanaugh was tabbed the league's Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, while McLaughlin was named the Rookie of the Week. The pair helped the Blue Devils extend their unbeaten streak to seven games and improve to 6-1-2 overall.
CCSU opens Northeast Conference play at Robert Morris on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
Cavanaugh posted a pair of shutouts last week to improve her season total to an NEC-best five cleansheets. She turned away nine shots in a scoreless tie against Seton Hall on Sunday to extend her shutout streak to 418:26. CCSU currently leads the NEC, having allowed a league-low 0.56 goals against average. Cavanaugh has made 41 saves on the season with an .891 save percentage, which leads the conference.
McLaughlin posted her second assist of the year, helping set up the only goal in a 1-0 win at Maine on Sept. 13. The freshman midfielder had two shots in each of the Blue Devils' contests last week. She has a pair of assists on the season and has helped CCSU average a league-best 1.33 goals per game. Central's offense is also taking a league-high 14.78 shots per game.
The Blue Devils open league play at Robert Morris on Sunday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM in Moon Township, PA.
