Central Undefeated in NEC and will Host Conference Tournament
CCSU beat SFU in their last regular season game 1-0.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team closed off the regular season with a 1-0 win over Saint Francis University on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils conclude their regular season slate at 14-1-2 and 8-0 in league play with the NEC Tournament one week away. The Red Flash, who has also clinched a spot in post-season play, falls to 6-8-3 and 4-2-1 in the NEC.
During a scoreless first half, the Blue Devil's defense was solid against five corner kick opportunities from the SFU and senior Ashley Cavanaugh had a diving save off a Red Flash penalty kick.
The golden goal came late in the game at the 82:28 mark when sophomore Jenna Rae Covello crossed the ball looking for junior Yo Tachibana inside the box, but the ball was deflected into the goal by a Red Flash defender giving Central the 1-0 lead.
The Red Flash finished with a slight 17-11 edge in shots. Cavanaugh finished with seven saves in the goal for Central and recorded her 11th shutout of the season. Julia Hernan finished with six saves for SFU.
With its spot in the 2018 Northeast Conference Tournament already solidified, the CCSU women's soccer team will have to wait until Sunday afternoon as the rest of the NEC members finish out their regular season slates to find out who stands in its way of the program's ninth conference championship.
Central will be hosting the conference tournament in New Britain, CT on Nov. 2 and 4. Further postseason information will be released Sunday, Oct. 28.
