Women's Soccer Blanked By Sacred Heart On Friday Night
The CCSU women's soccer team fell to Sacred Heart, 1-0, in NEC action on Friday night in Fairfield, CT
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team was shutout for the third consecutive match and fell to intrastate foe Sacred Heart, 1-0, in Northeast Conference action on Friday night in Fairfield, CT. The Blue Devils drop to 5-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the NEC with the loss. Sacred Heart breaks a six game skid with the win and improves to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the league.
The Pioneers scored the lone goal of match in the 51st minute when senior Dana Cosmedy connected on a header off a cross from junior Emily Montgomery. Montgomery took Sacred Heart's second corner kick of the match, sending it short into the box, but the Blue Devils were unable to clear it down field. The rebound went back to Montgomery in the corner and she sent in another high cross, this time finding the head of Cosmedy and past CCSU junior goalkeeper Nicki Turley at the 50:31 mark. The marker was the seventh of the season for Cosmedy and proved to be the game-winner.
SHU's Talia Schwartz earned the victory in net, recording her second shutout of the season, and improves to 4-10 on the season. She made six saves in the win.
Turley made five saves for the Blue Devils, but was dealt the loss between pipes and drops her record to 4-4-2 on the year.
The Pioneers held a slight 16-15 advantage in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal in the match. Sophomore Maggie Filja paced the SHU offensive attack with three shots, putting one on frame. Junior midfielder Brianne Casey led CCSU with three shots and put one shot on goal.
The Blue Devils held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 7-5, but were unable to connect on any set pieces to find an equalizer.
Central will look to rebound as they take a break from NEC action with a non-conference matchup at Yale on Monday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and all of the action can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.
