Hubbard Lifts Women's Soccer Over Fairfield In Double Overtime
The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory in double overtime over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Emma Hubbard found the back of the net at the 104:18 mark in double overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a 1-0 victory over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon in CCSU's second match of the Fairfield University Women's Soccer Invitational. With the victory, the Blue Devils move to 2-0 on the year and were tabbed the tournament champions. Drexel and CCSU both finished the tournament 2-0, but the Blue Devils finished with a better goal differential to claim the title. The Stags fall to 1-3 overall with the loss.
Hubbard collected a loose ball after a scrum in front of the Fairfield net and was able to beat the keeper to give the Blue Devils the win. The goal marks the second in as many games for Hubbard so far this season.
Junior goalkeeper Nicki Turley recorded her first shutout of the 2015 campaign between the posts for CCSU. She posted six saves and moves to 2-0 on the year.
Central held a commanding advantage in shots throughout the match. In total, CCSU out shot Fairfield 22-14, including 5-3 in the overtime periods. They also held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Hubbard led the way for the Blue Devils with five shots and senior Claire Walsh was right behind her with four.
As tournament champions, the Blue Devils also saw four members earn All-Tournament Team honors, including Tournament MVP Emma Hubbard. She was joined by Nicki Turley, junior Kelly Halligan and sophomore Jennifer Cafferky.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team will return to action next weekend with the Yale Tournament in New Haven, CT. They are scheduled to play Massachusetts on Friday night at 5 p.m. and then will face-off with Hofstra on Sunday at 12 noon.
