Women's Soccer Shuts Out Robert Morris, 2-0
Blue Devils collect sixth shutout of the year.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team picked up its sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Robert Morris on Friday at the CCSU Soccer Field. An early goal by freshman Emma Hubbard was enough cushion as junior Nicki Turley earned her fourth shutout of the season.
With the victory, CCSU improves to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris falls to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in NEC play
Central got on the board in the third minute when freshman Charlotte Maurer slipped a pass to senior Delaney Lancor just outside the 18-yard box. Lancor fed Hubbard on the right who ripped a shot from inside the box into the upper left side of the net to make it 1-0.
The Blue Devils added to the lead in the 33rd minute after Lancor took down a pass and moved through the Robert Morris defense before slipping a pass to senior Charlie Branch, who put a shot to the upper right corner, just inside the post to make it 2-0.
Robert Morris threatened to score in the 30th minute after Erin Ritzer's initial attempt from the left wing was blocked. The ball came to Cassie Raymond who had an unmarked shot on goal from the right side, but Turley made a diving save to push the ball away.
The Colonials nearly got on the scoreboard in the early going of the second half when Kristie Hamilton lofted a shot that just missed and went off the crossbar.
With just under 10 minutes to play, both teams had scoring chances. Raymond sprung loose for RMU first, but Turley came sliding out to stop the scoring chance. At the other end of the field, Lancor and junior Alysa Christo combined on a chance, but Chelsea de Jager made a save on Christo's shot.
Turley finished with seven saves for the Blue Devils. De Jager had four saves, all in the second half, for the Colonials.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they host Saint Francis U.
