In addition to the team award, four student-athletes were named Scholar Athletes by the NFCA. Kendall Sours, Erin Kelley, Abby Harpp and Kate Hoffman all earned national recognition for their success in the classroom.
The Blue Devils ranked 82nd in the nation in GPA among softball teams last season. The student-athletes of the softball team combined to post a GPA of 3.175 for the 2009-10 academic year.
Coach Jeff Franquet was very pleased with his teams academic success, "We stress every day for our athletes to do well in the classroom, and to finish 82nd in the country for the highest team GPA is a great accomplishment for us. We want to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher every year. We have a goal of Top 50 this year, and with our Academic Center on campus we will have a good shot at reaching our goal."
For the individual honorees, Kelley and Sours were both juniors for the Blue Devils last year, Harpp was a sophomore and Hoffman a freshman. All four student-athletes saw significant playing time last season for the Blue Devils. Coach Franquet praised the commitment his players have made to academics and athletics, "We are so proud of the student-athletes that were selected as Scholar Athletes. It is a true sign of Abby, Kate, Erin and Kendall's dedication in the classroom, and on the field. This is a wonderful achievement and a great accomplishment for our athletes."
The softball student-athletes have Coach Franquet expecting big things in 2010-11, "I am so proud to have Scholar Athletes on our team. The easy part of our job is teaching the players to hit and throw, but the most difficult part of our job is maintaining our common goal of a 3.0 GPA and having a handful of Scholar Athletes every year. We have a wonderful Academic Center on campus under the leadership of Kevin Olivia, and with his help all year long we have the resources to maintain our 3.0 Team GPA. We are looking forward to another great academic year with our team, and hopefully the most successful season in program history on the field."
