Blue Devils Sweep Holy Cross
Senior Elizabeth Montemurro picked up a win and a save in a doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross on Tuesday. With her win Montemurro becomes the Blue Devils all-time leader in victories with 35. Central took game one 3-2 and game two 5-0. The sweep improves Central's record to 27-20-1 on the season, at 11-9 in the Northeast Conference the Blue Devils are still in the hunt for a spot in the NEC tournament.
The Central Connecticut softball team swept Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Elizabeth Montemurro picked up a win and a save in a doubleheader. With her win she becomes the Blue Devils all-time leader in victories with 35. Central took game one 3-2 and game two 5-0. The sweep improves Central's record to 27-20-1 on the season, at 11-9 in the Northeast Conference the Blue Devils are still in the hunt for a spot in the NEC tournament.
Game One
The Blue Devils held on for a 3-2 victory in the opening game. Sophomore Jordan Tingley allowed only two runs over six innings to earn the victory and Montemurro earned her first save of the season by pitching the final inning.
The Blue Devils got on the board with a single run in the third inning. Junior Rebecca Mussatti led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a hit by junior Sarah Vlahos, Mussatti scored on a sacrifice by freshman Arielle Bruno.
A two out triple by sophomore Macy Stefanski scored a pair of runs for Central in the fourth inning. Sophomore Kelsey Barlow and sophomore Kate Hoffman scored the runs in the inning.
The Crusaders scored a run in the sixth and then scored another run in the bottom of the seventh be for Montemurro came in to close the door.
Tingley improves to 10-8 on the season with the victory. Stefanski went one-for-two at the plate with two RBI.
Game Two
Montemurro threw a complete game shutout to become the Blue Devils all-time leader in wins. She scattered six hits, and struck out three Crusaders without walking a batter.
The Blue Devils broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with a single run on a double by freshman Tessa Brown. Sophomore Sarah Emery scored the run after pinch running for senior Kat Knowles who had singled earlier in the inning.
Central blew the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. With one out Brown launched her second double of the game, and then she moved to third on a ground out. That is when the two out rally started. Mussatti singled in a run, Stefanski singled in a run, and Vlahos singled setting up two on and two out. Bruno reached on an error that scored two more runs and gave the Blue Devils the 5-0 lead.
Montemurro improves her record to 12-7 on the season. Brown went three-for-three with two doubles and an RBI.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday with a single game at the University of Hartford.
