Hills First, Blue Devils Third at Lafayette on Monday
Sophomore wins second tournament this year
Sophomore Matt Hills won his second tournament of the 2014-15 season and posted his fourth top-10 finish of the year with a victory at the 2015 Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational. The tournament was held at Silver Creek Country Club and was hosted by Lafayette.
Hills posted a two-day score of 143 to claim medalist honors. He also posted an individual victory at the NEIGA Division I Championships this past fall. He won by two strokes.
As a team the Blue Devils finished in third place overall with a score of 594. St. Peter's won the team title with a score of 591, followed by Lehigh at 593 and then CCSU.
Hills fired a first round score of even par (71) on Sunday and followed that up with a round of +1 (72) on Monday. His 143 was good for a two-day total of one over par.
Senior Monte Mullen shot a 146 (72-74) to finish right behind Hills in a tie for fifth place overall. Sophomore Nick Direda shot 153 (77-76) over the two days to finish in a tie for 33rd and right behind was classmate Bryant Bolden (78-76-154) who finished in a tie for 39th. Junior Connor Murphy rounded out the Blue Devil scoring with a 158 (76-82) and was tied for 56th place. Central shot 296 in the opening round on Sunday and led the tournament after day one. They shot 298 as a team on Monday to finish in third place overall out of 13 teams.
St. Peter's won the tournament, followed by Lehigh, CCSU, Monmouth and Lafayette to round out the top five.
Silver Creek Country Club's championship course is a 6,655-yard, par-72 loop that was established in 1934. The course was designed by famed golf course architect Donald Ross. The facility features a practice putting green, a short range practice area and a practice range with yardage markers from 50 to 275 yards.
