Volleyball Sweeps Molten/NEC Weekly Awards for Second Straight Week
The Blue Devils earned a share of the Northeast Conference regular season title.
Senior Lindsey Massicotte and freshman Samantha McCreath earned Molten/Northeast Conference weekly volleyball awards on Monday, helping Central Connecticut sweep the awards for the second straight week. Massicotte was named Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, while McCreath picked up the Rookie of the Week award. CCSU won both of its matches last weekend to clinch a share of the NEC regular season title.
The Blue Devils are the three-seed for the league's championship tournament and will face second-seeded Bryant on Friday afternoon.
Massicotte had an outstanding weekend, averaging 7.56 digs/set and helping CCSU hold its opponents to a .138 hitting percentage. She had a record-breaking match on Friday night when she collected 46 digs in a 4-set win at Saint Francis U. The total eclipsed her own record set earlier this season and is a season-high in the NCAA this season. It also matched a league record and is the 11th-highest single-match total in NCAA history. She followed that with a 22-dig, seven-assist effort against Robert Morris on Saturday in a five-set win. The victory was the fifth straight for Central and 10th in its last 11 matches. It is Massicotte's first Player of the Week award this year and her third Defensive Player of the Week honor.
McCreath led CCSU with 3.78 kills/set last week, while adding 4.33 digs/set and three total blocks with two assists. She closed the season with a double-double in back-to-back matches. She opened the weekend with 17 kills and 16 digs with two blocks to help CCSU to a four-set win at Saint Francis U. McCreath closed the regular-season with a 17-kill, 23-dig outing in a five-set win at Robert Morris, helping the Blue Devils to a share of the NEC regular season crown. McCreath has been named Rookie of the Week three times this season.
Central is back in action on Friday afternoon in the NEC Championship semifinals against Bryant. The tournament will be held at LIU Brooklyn.
