Volleyball Falls to Stephen F. Austin Sunday Afternoon
Senior Lindsey Massicotte earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to Stephen F. Austin, 3-1, on Sunday in its final match at the Stetson Invitational. Senior Lindsey Massicotte was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Blue Devils now stand 1-2 on the season.
Junior Kaitlyn Kushman recorded a double-double for the Blue Devils with 17 assists and 21 digs, while classmate Raquel Quirarte had a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs to go with four blocks. Massicotte added 16 digs and six assists. Sophomore Madelyn Kaprelyn led the team with 14 kills and added four blocks.
SFA took the opening set, 25-20. The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but sophomore Erin McDermott would serve four straight points as CCSU took a lead with five straight points. The Jacks took control of the set with a 5-0 run to go ahead, 20-14, and take the opening frame.
Central would rebound with a 25-16 win in the second set. Central scored the first two points of the set and would lead throughout. Senior Maddie Smith would serve five straight points to give CCSU its largest lead of the set at 23-13 before Quirarte would get a kill to close it out.
The third set was a back-and-forth frame. The Blue Devils would hold the largest lead of the set, going ahead, 21-18, on a kill by Quirarte. The set was tied at 27 before the Jacks took advantage of a pair of miscues to win the set, 29-27.
SFA took the fourth set, 25-17, to win the match. The Lumberjacks took control by using a 9-1 run and would not allow CCSU closer than six points the rest of the set.
Stephen F. Austin moved to 1-1 on the season and was led by Haley Coleman's 14 kills, 13 digs and four blocks.
Central is back in action on Friday, Sept. 1, at the Crosstown Tournament against Lafayette.
