Volleyball Sweeps Iona, 3-0, on Wednesday
The Blue Devils travel to Brown on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team used a strong defensive effort and balanced attack to pick up a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) at Iona on Wednesday night. Central held the the Gaels to a .106 attack percentage and freshman Samantha McCreath had a team-high 10 kills to help CCSU win its third straight match and improve to 6-3 on the season.
McCreath added eight digs. Sophomore Madelyn Kaprelyan added seven kills for CCSU, while junior Raquel Quirarte finished with six kills and eight digs. Junior Katelyn Kushman had 18 assists and sophomore Erin McDermott added 12 assists to go with nine digs. Senior Lindsey Massicotte finished with 12 digs.
Iona raced out to a 4-1 lead and held an 11-7 lead later in the set. The Blue Devils would use a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the night. Central closed on a 5-1 run and took advantage of two Iona errors to close out the first set.
Central built an 8-3 lead to open the second set, including a string of four unanswered points capped off by a kill from McCreath. The Blue Devils led throughout the stanza and would score the final five points, including four consecutive service points from Quirarte to win, 25-18.
The teams went back-and-forth in the third set with neither team leading by more than two points until CCSU took a 15-13 lead on consecutive aces by Massicotte. The lead remained at two points until Central ran off five unanswered points, including an ace by senior Maddie Smith to make it 22-16. Iona would mount a late charge with three straight points, but a kill by Quirarte closed out the match.
Central is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a 7:00 p.m. match at Brown.
