Volleyball Downs Robert Morris; Wins Fourth Straight
The Blue Devils have won four straight NEC matches
The Central Connecticut volleyball team downed Robert Morris, 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 15-25, 25-21), on Saturday in a Northeast Conference match at Detrick Gymnasium. The win was the fourth straight league win for CCSU, which improved to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the NEC. Central had three players with double-digit kills.
As a team, the Blue Devils hit .304 as a team. Junior Raquel Quirarte led the CCSU attack with 14 kills, while freshman Emma Henderson had 13 kills and sophomore Madelyn Kaprelyan added 10 kills. Sophomore Erin McDermott had 23 assists and junior Kaitlyn Kushman added 19 assists.
Defensively, senior Lindsey Massicotte had 22 digs, while McDermott added seven. Central had nine team blocks, led by freshman Eline van Heijningen with five total blocks.
Central built a six-point cushion in the opening set, powered by a 5-0 run to make it 19-13. A kill by Henderson would end a run of three straight Colonials points to end the set.
CCSU trailed by as much as 11-6 in the second set, but a kill by van Heijningen would tie the score at 16-16. Consecutive kills by Quirarte would give Central the lead at 22-20 and a run of three straight points to close the set, including another kill by Quirarte, would give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead in the match.
RMU would try to build momentum in the match and came out to build a 4-1 lead in the third set. The Colonials would use two more runs of four unanswered points to push its lead to 22-13 before taking the set to extend the match.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the fourth set with the first three points and would lead throughout the frame. CCSU would push the lead to as much as 14-4, but RMU would try to rally and got back within two points late in the frame. The Blue Devils would capitalize on a pair of errors to close the set and win the match.
Central hosts Bryant on Friday, Oct. 20, in a 7:00 p.m. match. The contest will be the team's Dig Pink match.
