Volleyball Hosts "Dig Pink" Match Friday Night
The Blue Devils host first-place Bryant in Northeast Conference action.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team will host its "Dig Pink" match on Friday night, Oct. 20, to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The Blue Devils will play Bryant in an important Northeast Conference match at 7:00 p.m. in Detrick Gymnasium. Admission is free to everyone and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the cause.
The Dig Pink event is held in coordination with the Side-Out Foundation in October during Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event brings together volleyball players across the nation to raise funds for breast cancer research, demonstrate the power of teamwork, and show support for people with the disease. The Friday night contest will feature the top two teams in the NEC standings. Central comes into the match on a four-match win streak after defeating Saint Francis U and Robert Morris last weekend. The Blue Devils' last loss came on Sept. 29, when they visited the Bulldogs. Freshman Emma Henderson was named the Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week on Monday, the third CCSU rookie to earn the honor this season. Central is the top defensive team in the league, holding opponents to a .162 hitting percentage and averaging 2.66 blocks/set in all games. Senior Maddie Smith leads the league with 1.37 blocks/set, while also hitting a league-high .398.
Bryant dropped its first league match of the season, falling to Saint Francis U in five sets on Saturday. In league play, the Bulldogs are holding foes to a .128 hitting percentage and Grace Richmeyer is averaging 1.41 blocks/set.
CCSU was picked third in the league's preseason poll, collecting two first-place votes, while Bryant was just behind, being picked fourth. The Bulldogs won the first meeting of the season, 3-1, on Sept. 29 in Smithfield, RI.
