Volleyball Downs St. Francis Brooklyn for First NEC Win
The Blue Devils split the pair of conference matches this weekend.
Central Connecticut picked up its first Northeast Conference volleyball win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at Detrick Gymnasium. Junior Raquel Quirarte (16 kills, 10 digs) and freshman Samantha McCreath (12 kills, 12 digs) both picked up their second straight double-double in the win.
The win moves Central to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in NEC play on the season.
The Blue Devils built a 2-0 lead in the match, taking each of the first two sets by a score of 25-23. The Terriers would stay alive in the match, taking the third set by a score of 28-26. In the fourth, and final, set CCSU raced out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back en route to taking the set 25-16 to finish the match.
In addition to Quirarte and McCreath, sophomore Madelyn Kaprelyan finished with double-figure kills with 11. Sophomore Erin McDermott had a match-high 31 assists, while junior Kaitlyn Kushman finished with 23. As a team, Central hit .292, led by freshman Eline van Heijningen. She hit .545 and finished with seven kills.
Defensively, senior Lindsey Massicotte had 14 digs, while senior Maddie Smith had eight blocks. The Blue Devils limited St. Francis to a .184 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Bryant for a 6:00 p.m. match.
