Volleyball Wins on Senior Day, 3-0, Over FDU
The Blue Devils clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament with the win.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team won in straight sets over Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, on Senior Day at Detrick Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils improved to 15-7 overall and 9-3 in the Northeast Conference with the victory and secured a spot in the NEC Tournament. Seniors Lindsey Massicotte and Maddie Smith were honored prior to the game in their final regular season home match at CCSU.
The Blue Devils took the straight-set win with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.
Central used a 6-0 run midway through the opening set to open an 18-12 lead and would go on to take the early lead in the match. In the second set, a run of five unanswered points from the Blue Devils would break at tie as they built a 19-14 lead. FDU would close within, 19-18, but CCSU would take the set to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Central got eight straight points on the serve of freshman Emma Henderson to build a commanding 8-1 lead. The Knights would rally and lead, 17-16, but three straight points by CCSU would turn the tide for good. Junior Kaitlyn Kushman served the final five points as the Blue Devils would clinch the match and improve to 6-1 at home.
Sophomore Erin McDermott had 14 assists and 11 digs for the double-double to lead CCSU. Freshman Samantha McCreath led the Central attack with nine kills, while sophomore Madelyn Kaprelyan added eight kills. Kushman had 13 assists to go with eight digs and three aces.
Massicotte had a match-high 17 digs, while Smith added five kills with three blocks. Freshman Eline van Heijningen had four blocks and five kills, while hitting .625.
The CCSU defense limited FDU to a .114 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils travel to Saint Francis U on Friday, Nov. 10, for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
