Volleyball Tops Sacred Heart in Four Sets
The Central Connecticut volleyball team improved to 4-1 in the NEC play with the victory.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team improved to 4-1 in Northeast Conference play with a four set victory over Sacred Heart on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils were led by freshman Makenna Lommori who contributed 36 assists and three solo blocks in the match.
Central improves to 9-9 on the season with the victory. Sacred Heart falls to 4-15 and 2-3 in the NEC with the loss.
The Blue Devils captured the first set, 25-21, behind 17 kills and five blocks. Seniors Jamie Rademacher and Blaike King led the offense on the attack in the game. Rademacher also chipped in on a pair of the Blue Devils' blocks in the set.
CCSU carried its momentum into the second set and quickly built a 10-4 lead. The Blue Devils took the game by a score of 25-18. Senior Emily Cochran led the squad in the set, she posted five kills, four digs and two assists.
The Pioneers rebounded in the third to pick up their only set victory of the match by a score of 25-18.
The Blue Devils used solid defensive play to capture the fourth and final set of the match. As a team, CCSU recorded 28 digs and five blocks. Central also recorded nine kills in the 25-23 victory with Lommori earning the assist on each successful attack.
Lommori finished with solid all around numbers in the match. She posted six kills, a .545 hitting percentage and 36 assists on offense. Defensively, Lommori recorded three solo blocks and assisted on five other blocks. She also had six digs in the match.
Cochran (13), King (9), Rademacher (8) and sophomore Rachel Dunlap (8) led the offense in kills.
Rademacher and Dunlap also contributed heavily to the Blue Devils' 14 team blocks. Rademacher matched Lommori with three solo blocks in the match.
Sophomore Brittany Schumacher led the reception defense with 23 digs in the match. Cochran also reached double-digit digs with 17 and King fell just short with nine.
The Blue Devils will return to action Saturday at Bryant and then will host Quinnipiac on Sunday. Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m. in Detrick Gym.
