Volleyball Tops William & Mary, 3-2
The Central Connecticut volleyball team defeated William and Mary in five sets on Friday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team defeated William and Mary in five sets on Friday afternoon. The match was part of the opening day of the New Hampshire Holly Young Invitational. The Blue Devils improve to 4-4 on the season with the victory.
The Blue Devils dropped a close opening set (26-24) in extra points, but CCSU quickly answered with a victory in the second (25-23). After a 25-21 setback in the third, CCSU delivered back-to-back victories in the fourth (25-19) and fifth (15-12) sets to win the match.
The accurate hitting of senior Jamie Rademacher helped power the Blue Devils through the match. Rademacher connected for a kill on 15 of 25 attacks and committed just two errors to post a .520 hitting percentage that was the highest in the match.
As a team, the Blue Devils recorded 59 kills and setting for almost all of those was freshman Makenna Lommori. Lommori totaled 53 assists in the match.
Lommori also contributed on defense as one of three CCSU players to record double-digit digs in the match. Sophomore Brittany Schumacher led the way with 21 digs, followed by senior Emily Cochran with 14 and Lommori with 10. Sophomore Amalia Ashley and senior Allyson Porter came close to double-digits with nine and eight, respectively.
The Blue Devils also played well at the net on defense. Junior Veronika Ban had three solo-blocks and contributed to five assisted blocks. As a team CCSU recorded 10.0 blocks in the match.
On the attack, Cochran led the way with 18 kills, followed by Rademacher's 15 and 14 from senior Blaike King. Senior Jennifer Waddill and Ban each had five kills in the match.
The Blue Devils will return to the court tomorrow for two more matches and the conclusion of the Holly Young Invitational.
