Volleyball Splits on Day Two of Invite
The Blue Devils defeated Holy Cross and fell to Brown on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team split its matches on the second day of the CCSU Invitational. The Blue Devils (3-4) captured a three set victory over Holy Cross before falling to Brown in straight sets to conclude the tournament. CCSU finished 1-2, the Red Storm of St. John's went undefeated to win the event.
Game 1
The Central Connecticut volleyball team won its second match of the CCSU Invitational against Holy Cross (0-5) in straight sets: 26-24, 25-14 and 25-18.
The first set was evenly matched and the teams traded points with the Crusaders eventually earning a six point lead for a score of 18-12. Central battled back, however, to tie the score 24-24 before closing out the set 26-24.
The second set began the same way before Central increased its lead to 17-9, pulling away on a 5-0 run that included a pair of aces and a kill by senior Emily Cochran. CCSU closed the set out 25-14.
The Blue Devils started strong in the third set and continued the momentum for a 25-19 victory capped off by a kill from senior Blaike King.
Cochran led Central in kills with 17 and was followed by King, who had 10. King also finished the match second in digs with 11, behind sophomore libero Brittany Schumacher who had 19. The Blue Devils surpassed the Crusaders in kills, 43-23, and in digs, 52-36.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory.
Game 2
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to Brown in straight sets to conclude the CCSU Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bears (2-1) captured the first set, 25-19, the second, 25-18, and the third 25-14.
The Bears dominated the net with nine blocks and also capitalized on several CCSU errors.
King led the Blue Devils in kills in each set and finished with a match-high 11. Cochran also reached double-digit kills, 10. Senior Jamie Rademacher posted five kills and sophomore Rachel Dunlap had four.
Schumacher led the defense with 18 digs. Giving her 37 over the two matches.
Freshman Makenna Lommori had 20 assists in the second match, equalling her total from the first match and giving her 40 on the day. Classmate Ashley Lenington posted 30 assists over the two matches.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Friday at the University of New Hampshire Holly Young Invitational.
All-Tournament Team
Senior Emily Cochran was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance at the event. She was the only Blue Devil to reach double-digit kills in each match and also contributed 15 digs over the three matches.
