Garber, Beaver Named ECAC Rookie & Diver of the Week
Maddy Garber and Kaitlyn Beaver picked up ECAC honors following their exceptional performances at Florida Gulf Coast University this past Saturday.
Freshman Maddy Garber and junior Kaitlyn Beaver of the Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team were recognized by the ECAC for their performances in the pool and off the diving board this past weekend. Garber was tabbed the Corvias ECAC Rookie of the Week, while Beaver picked up Corvias ECAC Diver of the Week honors following the duos exceptional day in a quad-meet at Florida Gulf Coast University.
Garber led the way for the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Aquatics Center in Fort Myers, FL. The rookie recorded two top-three finishes, including a first place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke and a third place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Garber took gold in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.16 and was less than a second from breaking the pool record. She earned her bronze medal in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.79. Garber was the only Blue Devil swimmer to place on the podium at the meet that featured FGCU, Liberty and Campbell.
Junior diver Kaitlyn Beaver joined Garber as the only other Blue Devil to step foot on the podium as she recorded two top-five finishes this past Saturday. Beaver scored 206.10 points in six dive attempts from the 3-meter board to earn a third place finish for CCSU. The Hamden native also dove to a score of 201.60 from the 1-meter board to earn a fifth place finish for the Blue Devils.
This is the second time Garber has been recognized by the ECAC this season, as she was also named the Corvias ECAC Rookie of the Week back on Dec. 11. She also sports three Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week awards so far in her rookie campaign.
This is the first time this season Beaver has earned ECAC honors, however she was also recognized by the NEC on Nov. 18 as Diver of the Week.
The Blue Devils will remain in the state of Florida for their next contest on Jan. 8 where they will face-off in another quad-meet hosted by Florida International University. Joining CCSU and FIU at the meet will be Texas Christian University and Florida Atlantic University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
